Homestay and Service in Strandfontein

Some of the kids at school. They would flock as soon as we would pull out our cameras.

March 1-8
Part of the Outtatown experience is homestays. During the three months here in South Africa we have had the opportunity to stay with three different families. Our last one was in Strandfontein with coloured families.
During the first two homestays we would see everyone during the day, but this time it was a little different. Our group was put into three different primary schools where we worked throughout the week. For the most part we worked by ourselves in a classroom all day.
I was in Strandfontein Primary School working in a grade two class with fifty learners and only one teacher. As you can imagine that took a lot out of me during the week.
The first few days I was with my grade two class and then later on in the week I ended up with another grade two class. I had to work all alone with fifty kids. This has helped me to gain so much more respect for teachers when it comes to disciplining the kids. There were many many times when I had to yell in order to be heard.
This week was really challenging but it taught me a lot. You need to have lots of passion and love for kids in order to lead a class of fifty students.

Story time with Libby!
Lunch break for the tired Canadian Teacher's assistants, who found themselves doing any number of things from marking tests, adding lines to notebooks, tidying up storerooms and doing presentations on many things ... include our home and native land!
The "After" shot of the storeroom that 10 people spent all day tidying! Not bad!
